I am looking at what is purported to be a 1989 Signature Series Custom Shop Strat, with a serial number of SE 921176 on the back of the headstock, along with the 'Custom Shop' and 'USA' logo. I have searched the Fender database, and I cannot find any information regarding this serial number. The tuners are locking tuners, and the nut is a roller nut. I am able to go and see the guitar, as it is only a short drive away. Assuming that the seller does not have that Fender Certificate, are there any other specific things that I should look for to confirm its authenticity when I physically inspect this guitar, without disassembling it? The asking price is $1,750, which seems like a really good deal, if the guitar is a legitimate Custom Shop Strat. I am not a Strat afficionado, though I do own a 2008 American Deluxe Strat. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
